Samsung Working on An Unbreakable AMOLED Display

Today’s smartphones are feature-rich and carry a hefty price tag. If you purchase one of these phones and drop it in an accident, its display is most likely to be damaged. Whether you phone has a keyboard or is a touchscreen device, a broken device will surely set you back a few bucks.

This is why Samsung is working to create unbreakable AMOLED displays that will survive those phone accidents that damage the screen’s of today’s phones. This news has been reported by OLED-Display.

“SMD plans to place a TFT (thin film transistor) on the plastic panel and to replace the existing vinyl protection sheet with PI (polyimide) film to avoid residue upon light emission.”

In the smartphone industry, there is an increasing demand of thinner and more durable screens. Samsung’s mission to develop unbreakable displays is surely a step in the positive direction.

However there is some speculation that the unbreakable displays will not feature digitizers. A digitizer is a component of the screen that enables the touchscreen feature. Without a digitizer, the screen cannot respond to touch; therefore it speculated Samsung’s unbreakable screens will come only for phones with keyboards. But how much of this is true, only time will tell.

Samsung plans on creating the screen within the next 2 years.

iPhone 4 jailbroken by Geohot

There are in increasing number of reports of people achieving the iPhone 4 jailbreaks. So far we have heard of The Dev Team’s all-rounder jailbreaking tools as well as iPhone 4 jailbreaks by @chpawn, @plantebeing, and @musclenerd.

The latest addition to ‘userland’ jailbreaks is one by a popular jailbreaker – Geohot. Geohot’s blog post came after 4 months of silence. Apparently he was busy in the iPhone 4 jailbreak. According to the blog post, Geohot jailbreaked his iPhone 4 the day he got it in his mail.

In addition to this, he mentions limera1n and Pwned4life exploit in his blog. Here is an excerpt:

“Got one of these in the mail today and figured I’d give it a shot.

As far as a release goes, it probably won’t happen from me. limera1n is little more than a raindrop on a website; it was never mentioned by me previous to this post. pwned4life is a complete invention of some blogger in a basement somewhere. When I said pwned for life, I was referring to the original iPhone, 3G, and Touch; which of course are, by the aptly named PwnageTool.

Again, please don’t ask for release dates. Every person that does makes me want to release a little bit less.”

It seems that Geohot will not be releasing his jailbreak method, at least not anytime soon.

Next iPod will Get iPhone 4 Features

The iPod’s main function has been to play music. Starting from a black and white display, the iPod first progressed to a color display, and then added support for videos. Later it moved on to the internet and released its 3G version which was significantly faster than its predecessors. But none of these changes were a revolution in how people used their iPod devices. All this will change with the next generation iPod.

Apple is going to introduce amazing new features into the next generation iPod. These features will be similar to the features of iPhone 4. Some of these features are a dual camera system that supports FaceTime and a 5 megapixel back camera, 720p video recording, A4 processor, and gyroscope.

In short, the iPod will have almost everything the iPhone has except the phone calling features. Users will have to face no buggy antenna / reception issues because there will be no phone to begin with.

This brilliant new iPod will be unveiled at the annual “Apple Media Event” in September.

YouTube Mobile Revamped

Keeping Android and iOS devices in mind, YouTube has heavily revamped YouTube Mobile. The focus has been a better interface along with major HTML5 implementations.

Interface-wise, many important changes have been introduced. Many touch-friendly elements have been added for touchscreen smartphones. Almost all viewing features available at regular YouTube are now available on YouTube Mobile including liking / unliking a video, favoriting a video, creating a video playlist, and search query suggestions.

Software-wise, an even bigger move is made towards HTML5. If your browser supports HTML5, then the video will be played in the HTML5 format rather than Flash. Not only has this brought better quality videos to YouTube Mobile but also increased speed over the YouTube applications for Android and iOS.

This move by YouTube is a clear indication that instead of creating desktop / OS apps, Google fully intends to keep everything within the browser. Developers should also notice that advanced applications can be created using the simple HTML5 platform.

Smartphone owners can make YouTube Mobile more accessible by visiting “m.youtube.com.” By following the instructions there, a shortcut can be placed on your phone. Tapping this shortcut will take you to YouTube Mobile.

iPhone 4 White Balance Photo Issue

The iPhone 4 has been a troublesome set for Apple. Although sales have been unexpectedly high, customer’s complaints regarding the phone are damaging Apple’s reputation.

The cycle of problems began with iPhone 4’s antenna / reception issue. Apple started by accusing customers of holding the phone in a ‘wrong’ way; the company then promised an iOS 4 update that would fix the inaccurate signal bars calculation formula. Exchange ActiveSync was also having problems in iOS 4, adding to the users’ displeasure.

In the series of iPhone 4’s problems, the latest entry is the white balance issue. When you enable white balance on a digital photography device, surfaces that appear to be white are displayed as purely white in the pictures. Macworld’s Heather Kelly illustrated the buggy white balance feature of iPhone 4.

As you can see, the white area captured by iPhone 4 is displayed as yellow – a big problem.

People who are facing the issue can take solace in the fact this is a software glitch and not a hardware problem which they will be stuck with. This yellowing of white surfaces might be fixed by resetting your phone or restoring it through iTunes. If the problem is still there, the next iOS update will hopefully fix it; now that Apple will learn of this issue, a fix will surely be added in the soon-to-be-released iOS update.

Nexus One Will Be The Only Nexus

With a name like Nexus One, one would naturally assume that there will be at least one more sequel smartphone. But Google has announced that Nexus One achieved its purpose and to make additions to the Nexus series would be rather useless.

Nexus was a breakthrough as far as Android was concerned. The phone’s hardware specifications included a 1 GHz processor, 4 GB microSDHC card included, 3.7 inch display, a 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a number of other impressive hardware. The phone was built by Google to fully take advantage of the Android OS and set a bar for all future Android phones. That aim was beautifully achieved the smartphone.

In a recent interview with Telegraph, Eric Schmidt (CEO of Google) said: “… the idea a year and a half ago was to do the Nexus One to try to move the phone platform hardware business forward. It clearly did. It was so successful, we didn’t have to do a second one. We would view that as positive but people criticized us heavily for that. I called up the board and said: ‘Ok, it worked. Congratulations – we’re stopping’. We like that flexibility, we think that flexibility is characteristic of nimbleness at our scale…”

Nexus One achieved what it was created for. As much as smartphone enthusiasts will be disappointed to hear that the set will have no successor, they can be content in knowing that Nexus One will always be known as the set that properly portrayed Android’s potential.

Android 2.1 Port For HTC HD2

Recently I read about an Android port procedure that worked on iPhone 2G and 3G. I was amazed to see that users will have the future of choosing their own mobile operating system in the future. This would solve any concerns a user had about a particular OS.

Now I see that Android has furthered its porting horizon. You can now find an Android 2.1 port for HTC HD2. In iPhone, Android was replacing iOS but in HTC HD2, Android will be replacing Windows Mobile. It will not exactly be a replacement since the Android will be running in dual boot mode alongside Windows Mobile. The port also gives you the option to run Ubuntu Linux “Karmic Koala” on your HTC HD2 handset.

Since the hardware specifications of HD2 and EVO 4G are not too far apart, with Android running on your HTC HD2 you can have a somewhat mini-version of the EVO 4G in your hand (excluding the 4G capabilities of course).

“HTC Linux” is the team behind this port; although their solution is still a little buggy (both in terms of Android and Linux), their port is greatly being appreciated.

Motorola Droid X is an awesome smartphone. With advanced hardware specifications (that include 8 GB storage, an 8 megapixels camera, and a super-large 4.3 inch display screen) the handset truly qualifies as a ‘superphone.’

Droid X was just recently released equipped with Android 2.1 which is a great OS; it makes good use of the phone’s features and provides users with a full Droid X experience. But OS-wise things are about to further improve for Droid X.

It is now official – Droid X will be getting an Android 2.2 (a.k.a. Froyo) update sometime in the summer. Not only Droid X but Droid 1 will also be getting the said Froyo update. As a leaked internal document confirmed, the Froyo update for Droid 1 will take place sometime in July.

Android 2.2 will be a great convenience to all Droid owners because of its new features. Flash 10.1 and native internet tethering are the highlights of Froyo. Furthermore the OS will provide Droid owners with wonderful boosts in speed because the Android 2.2 ROM is much faster than Android 2.1 and almost 2 to 5 times faster than 2.1 Eclair.
