iTunes App Store Hit By Developer And Account Fraud
After barely escaping the bad publicity resulting from iPhone 4’s antenna issues, Apple has fell into another public relations disaster.
If you are an iTunes accountholder, I suggest you change your password and remove card details first thing, before even reading the rest of this article. Why? Because there is a good chance your account has been hacked or is very close to being hacked.
In the last few weeks unethical activities by an app developer named Thuat Nguyen were noticed. The developer had hacked into many iTunes accounts, gotten free and paid apps from these accounts, and promoted his apps. He had been so successful that the top 40 out 50 apps in the ranks were his. Seeing the ‘popularity’ of these apps, other users started getting them thereby making their own accounts vulnerable to being hacked.
Having discovered Thuat Nguyen, Apple shut him down and a number of other fraudulent developers. All the developers seem to be based in Asia where they cannot be prosecuted under US law, unfortunately.

It is speculated that many other active developers are using the same tactics to promote their apps and get money from iTunes accountholders. iTunes accountholders have reported missing amounts between $100 and $1400. An anonymous source on MacRumors outlined the procedure of iTunes account hacking and explained that Apple does not face any losses in the procedure which is why the company has been so ‘loose’ regarding the issue.
A massive blow to Apple, this iTunes hacking will definitely tarnish the company’s reputation. For now, iTunes accountholders should immediately change their account passwords, remove their card details, and contact Apple for any dubious account activity.
