Google Anylytics OPT-out Browser Add On Launched
Google Analytics is one of Google highly popular services. It lets website owners track web traffic to their site. Analytics also provide site owners with tools that analyze traffic data and display them as charts and graphs. The analysis and graph view helps developers make important website decisions which would otherwise be very hard to make.
Analytics is constantly evolving to meet the needs of website developers. Now, Google has released two new updates to its Analytics service.
The first of these new features is Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Addon. Presently Analytics collects site visitors’ information which is important in judging the entire traffic. The addon stops data from being sent from your computer when you visit websites that use Google Analytics Javascript (ga.js) to track usage. The addon can be used on Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox. Get it here.
The second feature is letting Analytics users further safeguard the anonymity of their site’s visitor’s. To obtain geographical data, Analytics obtains the IP address of site visitors. Site owners can now choose for Analytics to get only a portion of the IP address for geographical reports. Link for implementation:

These features are meant to make site visitors feel more secure about their privacy. However they are being met critically by Analytics users. Firstly Analytics users claim that Google’s addon will be counterproductive to Analytic’s entire goal and it would render the service useless. Obviously if all users start using the addon and not data is collected, the site owners will not be able to analyze their traffic. As for the second feature, it would clearly decrease the comprehensiveness of the geographical data as the data’s accuracy would be less reliable.
Analytics user’s complaints are reasonable and it makes one wonder how Google could not thought of them. Only time can tell what their next move would be regarding Analytics.
