How To Count The Number Of Different Words In Any Text
Have you ever felt the need to search for a particular word in a document? Perhaps you just finished typing up a lengthy essay and want to check whether or not you overused the word “moreover”. While using the CTRL+F combination works in most applications to find a word, it fails to help us if we are trying to calculate how many times the word appears. If we want to calculate the frequency of a word in a given document, we will have to manually calculate it.
With Word Frequency Counter however, this task is automated and made extremely easy for us.
Word Frequency Counter is a small freeware application that lets us paste multiple texts into it, click on a button, and see the breakdown of all the different words occurring along with their respective frequencies.
The setup archive file is merely 430KB in size and downloads instantly. Installation requires your system to have Net Framework 4 installed. (If you do not currently have Net Framework 4, you can install the nearly 30MB setup file here.)
Here is what the main window for Word Frequency Counter looks like:

Suppose you the text you want analyzed is on a webpage you are viewing in your internet browser. You can copy the entire text, no matter how long, and paste it in the top file of the Word Frequency Counter. Then click on “Add Document” and the word frequencies will be instantly shown in the area below.

The “d1” column you see represents the word frequencies in the first text you added. You can keep on adding texts and the columns will keep increasing, showing the word frequencies of each word in each set of text. The “Total” column of course shows us the sum of all frequencies in all documents for a given word:

The program is also supposed to have the option of ignoring the case of the words however it did not work very well in our tests.
Once you have gotten you list of word frequencies, you can copy it as plain text and paste it in a text editing or word processing program. For a better look, you can also choose to copy it as a table and paste it in Excel. Buttons for both these copy features are located at the bottom of the program.
Word Frequency Counter is a tiny program which proves to be highly useful for word frequency calculating. If your work requires you to calculate word frequencies of texts and match them, then this is the ultimate option to go with.
