uTorrent Adds Video Streaming Support
Long gone are the days of the 56K fax modem. Dialup internet connections were slow, to say the least, and it often took days to download large files. Back then if somebody said that we could download a movie of 700MB in less than thirty minutes, we would have laughed. Yet we do exactly that today when we download movies with torrents. When it comes to the latest computer games, we download as much as 12GB at a time.
Technology has advanced at an exponential rate, increasing internet speeds by a previously unimaginable factor. Faster internet speeds translate into faster data transfer which translates into more peer to peer sharing.
When tracing my peer to peer software origins, I remember starting out with Limewire, then shifting to Frostwire. The feature of these programs I liked most was the ability to preview an audio or video file while downloading it. It gave me a YouTube like feel by reducing the time I had to wait to watch the video.
Of course I could not stay on those programs when torrents came. After trying my hand at many torrent clients, my torrent client of choice became uTorrent. Although the video previewing feature was not available, I was still happy at the outcome of uTorrent. The data verification of a file was easier and I downloaded lesser fake files.
But now uTorrent is planning to incorporate my favorite Frostwire feature into itself. Soon we will be able to view the previews of the videos being downloaded through uTorrents.

This feature is available in the beta release which can be downloaded here. Streaming the video does not slow down regular downloads and is fairly easy; all one has to do is click the green the play button which appears a while after the download begins. The default player to stream the video is the DivX web player but for best results it should be changed to the VLC media player which does not prove to be problematic as DivX can sometimes be.
uTorrent, my and a lot of other internet users’ favorite torrent client, has finally made this wonderful move to make it more like YouTube and cut back on the waiting time before one can see the movie.
BitTorrent, uTorrent’s parent company, is also planning to develop live streams powered by BitTorrent; this move could possibly trump YouTube in the video playback department and cause a lot of YouTube users to migrate over to BitTorrent.
With the addition of the video previewing feature to uTorrent and revelation of BitTorrent’s plans, the future looks very bright for both.
