I earlier wrote about Top 5 BitTorrent Clients for Ubuntu Linux, 7 Awesome 3D Graphic Design Applications for Linux and 23 Free Ubuntu Linux Login Screens. Today I’m going to write about some of the best Video editing tools for Ubuntu Linux because Linux itself doesn’t offer any default or built-in video editor application but there are tens of third party software for Linux you can use to add effects to your videos and do a lot more. I’m an editor and nothing on Linux matches professional software on any level. And believe me, I love love love Linux and so want there to be a good, free video editing software. Everything I’ve tried on Linux has been unintuitive and buggy. I’m hoping Adobe brings its creative suite over to Linux one day.
Great! not everyone needs all the Adobe’s After Effects resources anyway.
A software to be considered good do not need to be the best on planet. And for most people a simple software with less and more efective resources may be better. Not everyone is a professional.
Just to remember: most of these software are available to others operating systems, like MS Windows too.
@Bob C:
Your opinions are entirely ill-informed.
“[...] nothing on Linux matches professional software on any level.” and then you go on to reference Adobe. This is laughable. Do you know what an online is? Are you aware that in feature film production the percentage of offline editing sits at around 60/40 split between Avid and FCP? Are you also aware that neither of those apps are used to output motion picture footage? Indeed, one of the most significant online tools in the professional industry exists almost exclusively on Linux. Yes, it is _not_ free, but please don’t cloud the situation with your ill-informed speculation. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=5561833
With regard to the original article, I’d forward Blender as possibly the best hobby grade editor available as Free Software. It is stable and works wonderfully. Coupled with the nodal compositor, you can achieve quite amazing results. No ripple edits, L edits, etc., but those shortcomings could very well be addressed in the future.

Hi bob.
I wouldn’t doubt that you are a prof. But why do I then se more reports on Linux having the largest marketshare in Hollywod?
So many choices, so little that are actually usable.
Kdenlive is the only one I would bother with. Even that is not mature software yet. It is the only one that I would consider functional.
Kino is also great but very, very basic.
The rest have horrible interfaces, missing functionality or stability problems.
I have tried them all.
One can probably also get the Hollywood software they use on Linux… but that’ll be outside the price range of many.

don’t forget about pitivi. http://www.pitivi.org Its gstreamer based and shows a _lot_ of promise.
Also there is the emerging web based open source video editors kaltura.com, moviemasher.com etc. Firefox 3.1 video tag should help open up that space as well :)
Why are these all claimed to be Ubuntu specific? Don’t get me wrong, I have not installed each of these packages but I’m sure you could get them to run on most any Linux distro…Not only Ubuntu!

Nice list.
Another one I know of (but never trie yet) is Open Movie Editor – http://www.openmovieeditor.org/. Check it out!
I think its great someone came up with a list, but I wish they would have ranked the software from best to worst. I am also an Adobe guru but would love to find a free editor for linux.
Great list and description. What do you think is the best editor to use if I want to capture a short segment (say 2-5 minutes) from a DVD movie that I own so I can play it from my desktop.
Thanks
Thanks for the list. I have tried many of them and am currently using KDEnlive (with some experimentation with FFmpeg and Blender). My needs are fairly basic, add music and be able to fade from one scene to another. What I am looking for is a way to colour correct my underwater videos (I use the GIMP for my pictures). Does anyone know how this can be accomplished for video?
Nice post! Kudos. Also, some of them are included on this list (which also has extra apps like 2D/3D graphic, comics and other multimedia): http://ubuntulinuxhelp.com/top-100-of-the-best-useful-opensource-applications/

Recommendations?
I have no problems paying for software as long as it runs well on Ubuntu,is easy to install and easy to use.
I have a bunch of VHS tapes I have watched in the past by wiring an old VRC to analog/digital converter and connecting that to a TV card on my computer.
I would like a piece of software that will let me watch the VHS, capture the content, trim the content down, and then put it on to a DVD.
Any recommendations?

The above video editors are cool!
I tried most of them but “open shot” impressed me the most it has a bundle of more advantages than lot others….
Anyone wanting to install “openshot” can simply go to
–’Applications’->’Accessories’->’Terminal’
–In the terminal type the following
–sudo apt-get install openshot
–And there you are with the best editor

For those wanting a comparable (actually better) video editor to Movie Maker, KdenLive fits the bill greatly.
Please suggest me how to make video in Ubuntu using snap shots or slides. Is there any video on you tube?
