Microsoft releasing web version of Office Suite
Microsoft finally unveiled its upcoming release of Microsoft Office suite which offers a “lightweight” browser-based version at the 2008 Professional Developers Conference. Web-based Office will offer features for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. You will now be able to access all documents in your browser, phone or other devices. According to Microsoft customers’ requirements have changed, as have their expectations of technology. While Office is synonymous with desktop productivity, the idea of “desktop” has changed from a PC-centric notion to one in which people are empowered on the PC, on the phone, and with a browser. This web-based application is not exactly the replacement for Desktop Office but it will help them work more faster, easier, smarter and better.
The application will be delivered to consumers through Office Live. A service with both ad-funded and subscription offerings. On the other hand business customers will be offered Web Based Office as a hosted subscription service and through existing volume licensing agreements..
Senior Vice President of Microsoft Business Division Chris Capossela said “We are deeply committed to offering our customers the technology they need to succeed. Over the years, thousands of partners have sold Microsoft Office to millions of customers worldwide. The opportunities for our partners will increase as we continue to innovate with Microsoft Office. This announcement does not change the way customers buy Office. The biggest opportunity for OEM and retail partners continues to be selling Office to help their customers get better results faster.
When available with the next version of Microsoft Office, Office Web applications will increase the opportunity for OEM and retail partners as they extend the value of Microsoft. Office to the Web, thereby addressing the full range of their customers’ needs.”
Many features would be still missing in the web version when compared to desktop edition as its already mentioned that web version will not be replacement for Desktop version but none the less it will be of great help.
