Motorola Droid X Ad Mocks Apple’s iPhone 4

By now I am sure all my readers are aware of iPhone’s antenna / reception problems and how Apple has come with their case program as a solution. The case program will give all iPhone owners a bumper case to cover their phones; this will prevent the user’s palm’s contact with the phone’s back and avoid the bad reception problems.

Motorola has taken advantage of Apple’s bad antenna design for the iPhone 4 and mocked it in its latest ad for the Droid X.

“We believe a customer shouldn’t have to dress up their phone for it to work properly,” the ad reads. “The [Droid X] allows you to hold the phone any way you like to make crystal clear calls without a bulky phone jacket.”

Thanks to its 4.3-inch screen, the size of Droid X makes it nearly impossible for the average user to cover its entire lower back with their hand while making calls. But even so, the Droid X makes sure it gets optimum reception through its dual antenna placement.

If only Apple had paid more attention to iPhone 4’s antenna, the mess the company is in would never have happened.

Unified iPhone 4 Jailbreak and Unlock Utility?

I’ve been hinting about an all-in-one iOS 4 jailbreak package which would be compatible on all Apple devices and firmware version of iOS 4. However, today I’ve got bigger news and that is, we may be seeing a unified jailbreak and unlock utility coming soon for iOS 4 and iPhone 4. Yes you guessed it, a single utility which can do it all!

The iPhone Dev team behind the completely rewritten ultrasn0w has showed signs through their twitter updates that they might be releasing a unified package which would contain both the jailbreak and the unlock for iOS 4. Here is the actual tweet from the dev team:

“Planetbeing: We’re gonna be able to give you an unlock with the jailbreak.

Planetbeing: It will probably be the usual thing where you jailbreak and then install ultrasn0w from Cydia.

MuscleNerd: @Gangstatyzz hmm just staying the unlock is ready now, for whenever the public JB is done + debugged + packaged”

What does this mean? This means to get ready for a sooner than anticipated release of the official jailbreak and unlock utility for iOS 4.

Creator of Cydia Showing Jailbroken iPhone 4

Cydia is the most popular online app store found on almost all jailbroken Apple devices including the iPhone and the iPod Touch. The creator of Cydia, Jay Freeman, popularly known as Saurik gave an interview to Make It Work in which he showed the glimpse of a fully jailbroken iPhone 4 running iOS 4. Although there are several jailbreaks and unlock utilities now available for iOS 4 running on iPhone 4, a demonstration by Saurik of a jailbroken iPhone 4 has essentially confirmed the hacked status of Apple’s latest smartphone.

Apple Starts Giving Away Free iPhone 4 Cases

The previously announced iPhone 4 free case program by Apple started today with the launch of the web URL and the iTunes app. All customers who will buy the iPhone 4 through September 30, 2010 will be eligible for the free iPhone case which presumably solves the signal reception problem with the smartphone. Apple also announced that customers who have already bought the case for their iPhone 4 will be given a complete refund of what they’ve paid.

The iPhone 4 case program URL provides users with the necessary information on how to get their free case. The process is pretty simple; all you have to do is download the free app from the App store, sign in to your iTunes, select a case of your choice and place the order. The different types of cases available for free purchase are: Speck’s PixelSkin HD or Fitted, CaseGriffin’s Reveal Etch or Motif, Incase’s Snap Case, Belkin’s Shield Micra. Also the official bumper case is also available for purchase.

Skype Brings Multitasking to its iPhone App

iOS 4 was probably the last in line of smartphone operating systems which introduced the ever-so-important multitasking feature. However, when Apple did incorporate multitasking with iOS 4, the newest version of the operating system, they claimed that had done it “the right way”. Skype, a popular VoIP and IM service now is also adding the native multitasking support into its app for the iOS and iPhone.

The official statement from Skype regarding the newly released multitasking support for its iOS app is as follows:

“Run Skype in the background with multitasking in iOS4. Receive Skype calls and IM while other apps are running or when your iPhone is locked. You can also continue your call while you switch to another application. Multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.”

The new feature will help users better manage how their Skype utility works on their hand held device making things easier and efficient. What’s still missing from Skype though is the Skype-to-Skype video chat (just like Apple’s FaceTime) for the iPhone 4 and Skype support for iPad before the Skype package is complete.

All-in-one Device Jailbreak for iOS 4.0.1/4.1 Coming Soon?

With the news of the developer of sn0wbreeze starting to work on a new release which will be an all-in-one package for jailbreaking iOS 4.0.1 and 4.1 Beta on all versions of iPhone and iPod Touch, we’re now hinting that same may be the case with Spirit, another popular iPhone jailbreak utility.

While probing through the recent tweets of the developer of Spirit, my guess is that there might be another version of Spirit in the pipeline, based on the userland exploit and will be an all-in-one jailbreak tool with the capability to jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 and 4.1 Beta on all iPhone versions (3G, 3GS, 4) and iPod Touch 2G. Not only this, it will also be able to jailbreak the iPad on iOS firmware 3.2.1.

The following are some of the tweets made by Spirit’s developer, so have a look and guess yourself what might be coming out in the near future!

Jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 Using Sn0wbreeze 1.8 on Windows

Three days back, I reported sn0breeze v 1.8 will be soon released which jailbreaks iOS 4.0.1. The good news today is, the tool has been released today! Just like PwnageTool for MAC OS X, sn0wbreeze 1.8 jailbreaks iOS 4.0.1 running on iPhone 3G/GS and iPod Touch 2G uusing Microsoft Windows. iPhone 3G users will have to use redsn0w before applying an0wbreeze to complete their hack.

The step by step guide on how to get sn0wbreeze 1.8 working on your iOS 4.0.1 running iPhone is as follows (courtesy Redmond Pie):

Step 1: Skip this step if you already have iTunes. Otherwise, download iTunes via this link.

Step 2: Start iTunes and sync your iPhone with your PC and back up all the relevant data you have in the phone.

Step 3: Download Sn0wbreeze (available here) and the original iOS 4.0.1 (available here) firmware file for your version of iPhone/iPod Touch. Move all these files to your desktop.

Step 4: Start Sn0wbreeze executeable and select “Simple Mode”.

Step 5: Sn0wbreeze will now for the .ipsw file. Select the correct iOS 4.1 firmware .ipsw file by clicking the “Browse” button. Once it finds the correct file, the following will show up:

Step 6: Next, you will be asked “Do you want to activate your iPhone?” for hacktivation. Click on “No” only if you are on an officially supported carrier like AT&T.

Step 7: Sn0wbreeze will now create the custom .ipsw file for your device which will then be jailbroken.

Step 8:Next, restore your iPhone to iOS 4.0.1 firmware which was made using sn0wbreeze 1.8 in the previous steps. Select your device in iTunes and then press and hold left “Shift” button on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” button in iTunes.iTunes will now ask the custom firmware file. Select that custom .ipsw file downloaded before and click on “Open”.

Step 9: Leave iTunes to complete the restoration and make sure not to use your phone or do anything else with iTunes meanwhile. Installation will be shown via a progress bar on your device’s screen. After the installation is done, iPhone will restart automatically and you should now have a fully jailbroken iPhone running on iOS 4.0.1.

Step 10: Once the jailbreak process is complete, restore all your settings which you backed up during step 2.

I hope that this guide helps users in getting their iOS 4.0.1 running devices jailbroken. Feel free to ask questions if you’re stuck at any point.

Jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 iPhone 3GS with PwnageTool Variant

For all iPhone 3GS owners, I have got a mixture of good and bad news.

The good news is that there is an unofficial PwnageTool version roaming around the web. This version can jailbreak your iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.0.1 firmware. iOS 4.0.1 is the beta update to iOS 4 that is supposed to include a better, more accurate signals bars calculation formula.

As for the bad news: creators of the original PwnageTool have confirmed that this variant is in fact something made and redistributed without their permission or approval. But more importantly, the version neglects to patch some important files; resultantly you handset will be unable to use the ultrasn0w unlock.

Because of its unreliability and unlock issue I advise you to not try this tool. But if you are an iPhone enthusiast and want to check it out, understanding the risks involved, you can get the PwnageTool variant from here.

iOS 4.0.1 Hitting iPhone Right This Very Second

Apple released the iOS 4.1 Beta 1 earlier this week to developers and it promised many changes including the way how iOS calculates and displays the signal reception indicator bars on the iPhone. It seems that following the string of recurring problems regarding the bad signal reception problem, Apple decided to wait no longer for the complete iOS 4.1 update and word has JUST reached the internet about Apple offering its iPhone users on iOS 4 an update to upgrade their iOS to version 4.0.1.

Seemingly, this smaller upgrade focuses on the signal reception issue and solves the problem on how iOS calculates the received cellular signal strength and then displays bar to indicate the signal level. In addition to this, the source of this update, Engadget, also report that an operating system upgrade for the Apple iPad is also in the pipeline, ready to be delivered to users anytime updating their tablets to iOS 3.2.1.

We’ve got a before and after screen capture of the signal bars indicating the signal strength. Clearly some improvements!

SnOwbreeze 1.8 For iOS 4.1 Beta Jailbreak Coming Soon [Windows]

Ever since its release, iOS 4 and iPhone 4 unlocking has become the biggest ambition for all the iPhone hackers out there. With Apple releasing a new baseband version in iOS 4, the uphill task of jailbreaking unlocking the new operating system has been the top priority of many.

We’ve been following the releases of sn0wbreeze, a popular unlock tool for iPhone 4, iPhone 3G/GS and iPod Touch 3G and today the person behind this utility has announced a new version, sn0wbreeze V1.8 aimed for iOS 4.1 Beta build and will successfully unlock iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1 Beta 1 using Microsoft Windows. The developer hasn’t given any release dates yet, but it’s pretty obvious that it will come out soon, since the iOS 4.1 Beta 1 won’t last for a long time either.
