A long time ago some computer experts asked themselves that why can personal emails not be free? And the result of that thinking was Hotmail and consequently other free personal email service providers. Today these providers have advanced to such a level and provide us with such amazing facilities that we often take them for granted as if they were always there.

The thought that occurred to Hotmail’s creators, now runs in a lot of other developer’s minds; the only difference is that instead of emails, they ask why can SMS messages not be free?

A result of that thought process can be seen on the internet today. Many website-to-cellphone SMS sending websites exist. But they all have their flaws and fortes. Today we explore another one of such sites which claims to bring convenience to its users by providing the service of free text messaging. The site is names 160by2.

160by2 offers text messaging services for India, Kuwait, UAE, Saudi, Singapore, Philippines and Malaysia. So in order to enjoy its features, you first need to see whether or not you as well as the recipient of the text is in one of these countries.

Before you can start using the website, you will need to register for an account.

Then proceed to sign in with the created username:

And that is all, just start texting.

If you are wondering that such a service cannot be entirely free then you are correct. Unfortunately we are a little far away from the totally-free SMS messaging system. While you do not pay anything to send your message, 160by2 attached two advertisements to your message, each of 80 characters in length. The ad is based on the location and time of the recipient; this basis ensures to some degree that the recipient will be interested in it.

Check out 160by2 and see if it proves to be a worthy alternative to regular messaging.
